Eating Out

Lae has a few dining spots but if you are a true ‘foody’ the best food is the food you or your friends will make at home…

Bunga Raya – (472 7177) known for it’s take on Malaysian cuisine, it tops many people’s favorite list and is located adjacent to the Golf Club.

Yacht Club (LYC) – (members only Tuesday and Friday nights, kitchen closed on Mondays) – a selection of steaks, seafood, burgers, sandwiches and pizzas are the norm with daily specials.

Inter (Lae International Hotel) – several restaurants on its premises from pizzas to ‘fine dining’ (ahem).  My personal goto is the Smoked Salmon pizza with very little cheese* and extra capers – don’t knock it til you don’t try it…

Melanesian – located in the Melanesian Hotel – has gone through numerous chefs so hard to comment except that in my experience it’s been inconsistent on food.  I do like to go there for a cappuccino and reasonably priced internet.

Chige’s Coffee Shop – located in Bryan Bell in the Industrial area.  Good cappuccino, a variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads, burgers, etc.  Not open for dinner.

‘the new Aviat‘ next to the lawn bowls place upstairs – Asian cuisine…

Big Rooster and Red Rooster- fast food chicken joints

And numerous Kai bars which will serve fried chicken, chips and other local basics…

these aren’t the ‘only’ places in Lae but the most well-known…

*any pizza you order should be specified with ‘very little cheese / lik lik cheese tasol’ as they typically come heaped with the stuff.
