If we learn so much from our mistakes why are we afraid to make them?

One of my students is in my office today letting me know he’s failed 4 of his 5 subjects (I didn’t have him for any classes this semester).  He is one of the brightest and eager students in the department so his failure in academics has nothing to do with his abilities.  Actually I think most people don’t fail due to a lack of ability, merely a lack of effort.  This particular student admittedly lost his willingness to care this last semester, but more than that refused to turn in projects if he wasn’t happy with them.  He had his principles to uphold; he would rather repeat the level than pass with average marks.
