It’s a dark cloudy day, the rain has been falling for hours as Mikal and I turn off a side street and down a narrow alley to knock on an unmarked door, a door of local legends.  We pass through the first door into a room, except it’s more like a metal cage, a few dusty boxes are scattered around and a behind another metal wall sits a woman.  We give her the secret password, and she picks up the phone, eyeing us.  A few hushed conversations later she tells us to wait, a man will come meet us.  We glance at each other, is this going to work, are they really going to let us in?  It seems too good to be true.   Continue reading

Teaching Modern Architecture

For the last two years I have been teaching Modern Architectural History from William Curtis’ text Modern Architecture since 1900.  The text is great, AND I’d really, really like the students to actually do the weekly readings…but each year my attempts at ‘encouraging’ them to read by letting them know ‘how much they will learn’ doesn’t really do the trick… shocking, I know 😉 Continue reading
